Dynamische Sprachliche Beziehungen zwischen Zentrum und Peripherie am Beispiel des französischen. For a novel and generative theory of intertextuality, we consider formal definitions of the concept of copying by imitating, and of imitation by copying as the most elementary example of copying, and show that it can be applied to any kind of symbolic action. Our theory rests on the simple observation that whenever a sequence of human acts is experienced by a perceiver, all perceptual components, but not all of the components of all other elements, are copied. This can be assumed to be the defining feature of the copy (coble) concept, and it explains why copying is the lowest-level form of copying and of imitation: it is the least complex copy of an experience. The model is of a production system in which the perceived acts of a producer are copied; that is, they are mimicked. We then define imitation in terms of copying, namely, the act of producing an experience that is the exact copy of an experience that is already known. The imitation concept is then applied to various kinds of cultural products, with explanatory results. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to provide a formal definition of the general concept of copying and of imitation, and to show that imitation is as simple a concept as copying and that it has the same explanation. Imitation is defined as a basic form of copying. The term copying is used here in the same sense as in genetics, namely, copying is the procedure that makes a copy of an original. This original need not necessarily be a physical object; copying can also be done by way of a symbolic copy, for example, a record, a written text, or a film (Wilson 1998: 67). In imitation the copy is different from the original in certain respects. Therefore, copying and imitation are two different ways of making a copy. Copying is the making of a copy of a copy, or an exact copy of an original. The copy is, of course, a kind of imitation, but it need not be an exact copy of the original. It is the simplest imitation. The definition of imitation that we propose here can be illustrated by the following example of imitation. Someone watching a film, say film
